Zoopla has released a property inheritance calculation tool after research revealed users wanted more transparency about inherited wealth.
Respondents cited inherited wealth as being “taboo” because it is a subject focused on topics including death and money.
Only 30% of respondents claimed to have had a conversation with their parents because of this, while other respondents said this kind of information is none of their business.
But 50% British adults who have parents who own a property had checked the value to get an understanding of what they might receive if the property is passed down to them and their siblings.
Zoopla found six in ten people said they expect to be able to move, upgrade their home, or pay off their mortgage with parental property inheritance.
The new tool calculates the estimated property value and divides the result by how many siblings there are.
Daniel Copley, consumer expert at Zoopla, said:
“With house value data now easily available to access online, it’s interesting to see that so many are using this, not just to get an idea of what their own home may be worth, but to get an idea of the sort of amount they may get in terms of parental inheritance in the future.”
For people whose parents own a property, the average amount they expect to receive is £195,687, with the vast majority of that amount, £182,621, coming from the property element of their parents’ estate.
Meanwhile, Zoopla has launched a six-week, Valentines themed promotion to help agents meet their business objectives.
Dubbed "Product Pairs", the promotion offers agents three "pairs" of features as a discount price to push key metrics.
For example, Zoopla has paired Premium Listings with its Weekly Featured Property offer to rocket boost the agent's listing's visibility.
Zoopla has also paired In-Search Ads with Area Sponsorship to boost impressions, and the Zoopla Valuation Tool can be coupled with Audience Connect to retarget prospective vendors.
