WeWork heads a $200M plan to renovate Presidio's Fort Scott campus

March 24, 2019

OpenAI, an AI-driven company that started WeWork, has joined forces with the World Economic Forum to redevelop and renovate 22 buildings of the Presideio's Fort Scott Campus.

A development team led by Equity Community Builders submitted a joint proposal for the historic Fort Scott site, and it would include WeWork leasing and designing about 135,000 square feet of collaborative office space across nine buildings, according to the proposal.

WeWork's space would be split in occupation between "mission-driven" companies (those "focused on addressing the significant environmental and/or social challenges of our time," as specified in the Presidio Trust's Requests for Proposals) and the EPIC Institute, a non-profit funded by the California Clean Energy Fund, a private equity and VC firm. The Lela Goren Group, a woman-owned and operated real estate developer, would be the co-developer along with WeWork.

The Presidio Trust board of directors will review the proposal and plans to announce its decision in a public meeting on Thursday, May 23, according to its press release. They will hold another public meeting on April 24.

“We’re seeking a qualified organization with the vision and mission alignment to transform Fort Winfield Scott into a Campus for Change and we are pleased to have received this proposal,” said Josh Bagley, deputy chief business officer for the Presidio Trust.
