Plum, an AI-based employment platform, assists the University of Waterloo

Plum is a startup company receiving a lot of clout lately as they create a new software platform that utilizes artificial intelligence as well as industrial-organizational psychology to assist businesses in searching for the top talent and the best resumes to fill open positions. 

With funding from the Build in Canada Innovation program, the University of Waterloo's co-operative education program is now using Plum to match 20,000 students a year with positions at 7,000 top employers across North America.

"So it is a good reach-out," said Caitlyn MacGregor, Plum's co-founder and chief executive officer.

Last June, German software giant SAPinvested US$250,000 in Plum. That investment converts to shares after the startup's next round of financing that MacGregor is currently pursuing.

SAP's executive-vice president for human resources joins the board at Plum and the company offers the Plum platform in its app store. Sales reps at SAP get compensated for selling Plum.

"It is pretty amazing," said MacGregor.

Plum now employs 21 people at its offices in Waterloo and is hiring two more. One of the new jobs is to manage the partnerships that flow from the SAP relationship.
