Matterport’s Measurement Mode will be available in Showcase, the company’s web-based platform for exploring 3D spaces.

Matterport, a market leader for spatial data capture has announced the launch of interactive 3D measurements. Matterport’s Measurement Mode will be available in Showcase, the company’s web-based platform for exploring 3D spaces. The new functionality will provide users with the ability to share measurements taken in a Matterport digital twin with anyone. This will allow them to accurately measure rooms, windows, doors or furniture from PC or mobile device.

RJ Pittman, CEO at Matterport said:

“Measurement Mode is an important step in our strategy to turn buildings into data and actionable insights. This new capability gives customers an invaluable tool for sharing vital information of spaces or objects within a Matterport digital twin. The potential for smarter space planning, utilisation and collaboration for the built world is enormous.”

Andrew Knight, International Data Standards Director, at RICS said:

“Technologies, such as Matterport, are becoming increasingly important in providing transparency and reliable data for the built environment. Data and technology are having a profound impact within the real estate world, as tech and industry professionals work in balance to ensure that as an industry we are working in the public interest. The ability for technology to accurately measure, provide accurate information, and be used in a simple way has been game changing for a number of professions operating across the built environment. We look forward to seeing how much further the marriage of technology and people can go and how it can provide the right tools to enhance practices such as measurement.”

Industries spanning architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC), real estate, retail, travel and hospitality, insurance and restoration will benefit from this important new capability.

AEC professionals can share Matterport digital twins with stakeholders so they can review property measurements from anywhere in the world. Or they could make a bid for a project virtually and reduce the number of change orders. Measurement Mode increases efficiencies by reducing on-site visits owing to precise measurements.

For real estate professionals, the new measurement tool provides another selling point for agents and/or sellers by allowing prospective buyers or tenants to virtually measure if a space can accommodate their furniture, artwork, rugs and other design elements, limiting the unknown variable elements from the buying process.

The company is taking Measurement Mode further in 2020, eliminating the need for customers to take manual measurements in Showcase. Cortex, Matterport’s AI, will automatically identify and measure landmark features like doorways, windows and ceiling heights, saving customers a significant amount of time.

Once a space is captured, Matterport’s Cloud 3.0 software enables anyone to easily create a 3D digital twin.
