The surprise travel sector is fashionable, and this summer 2019 will be a trend. In fact, according to data from Flykube, a reference company for the travel industry, traveling without knowing the destination will grow up to 500% this summer season with respect to 2018. In other words, Spaniards who bet on surprise trips this summer are fivefold.

"Although the public until now is mostly young, we do see that it is becoming popular in other age ranges," says Sergi Vila, CEO of FlyKube. In this sense, FlyKube states that throughout the summer season of 2018 up to 3,000 travelers bet for their surprise trips: "This 2019, for now, we have about 6,000, I still have the months of June and July, which are reserved 60% of the total." The forecast is that this summer 2019 around 20,000 people will bet on surprise destinations for their summer holidays with Flykube.

Summer vacation travel trends: less planning, fewer days and tighter budgets

This boom of surprise travel brings with it a change in the habits of Spanish travelers when it comes to summer vacations. In fact, more than half are stays of less than a week, only 6% are three or more weeks, compared to 15.1 days on average that were seen in 2016, according to data from BrainTrust Consultancy.

According to a report by ObservaTUR, only 1 in 4 Spaniards book their summer vacations before June, and the oldest does so in the summer months. 61%. Additionally, those same travelers will do so through the internet. Another revealing fact that reflects this change of trend in the summer travel sector is that 50% of Spaniards allocate a maximum of 1,000 euros to their summer vacations.

"This new trend in summer tourism explains why the surprise travel boom: No planning, few days, good prices and a totally online purchase adapted to your needs," explains Sergi Vila

Flykube, in figures

FlyKube was launched in August 2017 by Sergi Vila, Albert Cuartiella and Paolo Della Pepa. As faithful followers of the LEAN Start-up philosophy, they tested the product with only an initial investment of 10,000 euros. Just over a year later, FlyKube billed between 1.5 and 2 million euros, and for this years, aims to be the market leader in Europe.

The head office of FlyKube is in Barcelona, and currently has a workforce of 22 workers

In fact, an investment round of 400,000 euros has recently been successfully completed. In this first round, ENISA, a public company financing fund of the Spanish State, the Canarian fund Archipelago Next and Bbooster Ventures participated.

The rise of surprise travel

The surprise travel sector is in full expansion, and FlyKube differentiates itself with competition in many ways: for its large number of available destinations (more than 200) in Europe, Africa and the Middle East; for having the cheapest product on the market (the All Surprise package, for only 99 euros) as well as being the only one that offers, with its VIPKUBE package, the possibility of VIP trips with stays in five-star hotels in Dubai or Monaco, with really competitive prices, among others. In essence, FlyKube offers travel experiences completely different from what exists in the market, with surprise as the central axis of the trip.

Flykube, which is already one of the leading figures in the sector, aims to lead the surprise market later this year. "Not only are we a surprise destination agency, like our competitors, but we offer global surprises that transcend the trip itself. FlyKube is a way of seeing life: discontented and millennial," says Sergi Vila.
