Enterprising giant Amazon has recently announced that $700 million will be spent towards the retraining of 100,000 of its employees within the U.S. by 2025 in hopes of giving workers options in their relationship with the company, and more avenues to move in their careers.
On average, this numbers amounts to about $7,000 per head, and will reach approximately a third of the company's work pool in corporate, tech, fulfillment centers, retail stores, and transportation.
The announcement comes as Amazon faces sustained criticism over its working conditions, particularly in its warehouses where employees are automatically tracked and fired to hit productivity targets. Recently, Amazon workers in the company’s Shakopee, Minnesota warehouse completed a strike to coincide with the company’s annual Prime Day sale, and in 2018, Amazon warehouse workers conducted similar strikes across Europe.
