US market-leading portal company Zillow is reported to be offering employees the same compensation whether they chose to work remotely or in the office.
As a world with Covid-19 becomes the new normal, many large employers around the globe are now facing the question of whether to bring employees back to the office or not. Where some big banking firms are insisting that employees return, others such as media giants Facebook and Google have said that they will allow remote work but may pay less for those working from lower-cost areas - a move which has generated plenty of controversy.
Zillow appears to be bucking this trend however in a move that may well help the PropTech giant lure the best talent, particularly in the competitive technical positions the company is looking to hire 2,000 more candidates for this year.
In comments given to Business Insider, Zillow Chief People Officer, Dan Spaulding said that it will not be changing its current policy under which employees are free to work from anywhere and are paid the same as those who come to the office, saying that "You can do as good engineering work in a small town as a big city".
Using language that closely follows the company's line on the pandemic, Spaulding went on to say that Covid-19 had "reshuffled" people's priorities and that to say that someone is worth less because they work outside the office "feels weird".
As a company whose founder Rich Barton also co-founded company review platform Glassdoor, Zillow clearly makes a big effort to generate the right headlines when it comes to human resources. The Seattle based firm recently signed up to the 'Black Boardroom' initiative and 'The Board Challenge' for gender equality in senior management roles and it also came out in second place in our analysis of the 15 top portals ranked by Glassdoor score.
